MUSOU BLACK PAINT

A water-based acrylic paint that achieves light absorption rivaling flocked fabrics and velvet, formulated to work in almost any painting environment with no special setup required.

Built for optical applications, but equally at home in scale-model building and fine art. We can't wait to see what you create with it.

01 / PERFORMANCE

Under 1.5% reflectance across the entire visible spectrum

Typical black paints absorb roughly 94–98% of visible light, a reflectance of 2–6%. Musou Black Paint pushes that to 99.4% absorption (airbrush application), an order of magnitude tighter than ordinary matte black.

The chart below proves it with real measurement data: compared to a standard black paint (reference, around 4% reflectance), Musou Black Paint stays under 1.5% across the entire visible range (250–750nm), whether applied by brush or airbrush. Hover any point to read exact values, toggle series in the legend, or switch the Y-axis scale.

A truly neutral black that never casts a color tint, in any lighting environment.

With no variation in reflectance by wavelength, subjects retain their true color under any light source, a difference that can take the finished piece to a whole new level.

02 / TEXTURE

A beautifully ultra-matte finish that traps light

The secret to Musou Black Paint's darkness lies in a microscopic surface structure formed in the cured coating. This structure scatters light internally, again and again, without letting it escape, producing an "ultra-matte" texture that conventional paints simply cannot achieve.

03 / EXPRESSIVENESS

Turns a model into something otherworldly

Musou Black Paint forms a smooth coating whether applied with an airbrush or a brush. Its overwhelming black erases the texture of plastic entirely, giving the surface an unreal presence, as if it were CG, or a shadow made solid.

Your collection stops being "objects" and becomes art that captures the viewer's imagination.

Plastic models, scale models, and craft projects
Non-absorbent materials may require surface prep or a primer.
⚠️Handling & safety notes
  • The cured coating is very delicate. Use it only on surfaces that won't be touched by hand.
  • Wear a mask, gloves, and eye protection during application, and avoid skin contact where possible.
  • Refer to the product Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full handling details.

FAQ

What is the heat resistance of this product?+

The heat resistance of this product is up to 80°C. Discoloration may occur above 80°C, so please take care with storage location and operating environment.

What's the biggest difference from ordinary matte paints?+

Standard matte paints create their "matte" effect by scattering light diffusely. Musou Black Paint instead traps light inside a microscopic surface structure formed in the cured coating, achieving overwhelming light absorption. This produces a "true black" that ordinary matte paints cannot replicate.

How should I apply this paint?+

We recommend airbrush application; no dilution is needed and it can be used as-is. If brush-applying, brush strokes may remain visible, applying several thin coats will make them less noticeable.

Does the finish differ between brush and airbrush application?+

Yes. Measured gloss at a steep 85° viewing angle is 3.3% for brush application versus just 0.10% for airbrush, airbrush produces the flattest, darkest finish, while brush application is slightly glossier at grazing angles. Both stay effectively glare-free (0.00–0.17%) at 20° and 60°.

Will this paint work on any material?+

It adheres well to most absorbent surfaces, including standard model plastics. Non-absorbent materials (such as glass or bare metal) may need surface preparation or a primer first for reliable adhesion.

Is Musou Black Paint water resistant?+

No. The cured coating has no water resistance, so it should not be used in wet environments or where it will be exposed to moisture.

Can I touch the surface once it's dry?+

We recommend against it. The cured coating is very delicate, even light contact can generate particles and damage the light-trapping surface structure. Reserve it for surfaces that won't be handled, and avoid touching it directly.

What safety precautions should I take when applying it?+

Wear a mask, gloves, and eye protection while applying, and avoid skin contact where possible. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full handling details.

Is this paint suitable for infrared or LiDAR applications?+

Not ideally. Reflectance stays under 1% through the visible range but climbs to 2.0% at 950nm and 10.7% at 1500nm, so it isn't built for broadband near-infrared suppression. For NIR-heavy applications like LiDAR or infrared sensors, our FINESHUT series and IR Flock Sheet are the better fit, both hold flat, ultra-low reflectance from visible light through 1500nm, with IR Flock Sheet staying under 0.5% all the way out to 2500nm.

Can I paint my car with Musou Black Paint?+

We don't recommend it for everyday automotive use. You may have seen media coverage of a Porsche 911 Turbo finished in Musou Black Paint, that was a temporary application for a photo shoot and exhibition display, not a durable daily-driver coating. The cured film has no water resistance and very limited contact durability, so dust and water spots will visibly degrade the black over time on a car used outdoors.

Which size should I choose?+

100mL suits a single small model or test piece, and covers approximately 0.9 square meters by brush, single-coat. The 100mL × 20-bottle set is convenient for workshops, classes, or stocking up at a lower per-bottle cost. 1L covers larger models, multiple projects, or small studio use. 15L is intended for professional, industrial, or high-volume applications.
