Musou Black Fabric FR
Due to the increasing demand for a fire-resistant ultra-black fabric, we created Musou Black Fabric FR. Developed alongside our Musou Black Fabric KIWAMI, Musou Black Fabric FR achieves a visible light absorption rate of over 99.8%, making it our second blackest material. Furthermore, it has been treated with a special coating that makes it fire-resistant. It is certified fire-resistant by JISL1091A (JP), NFPA 701 (US), EN 13773 (EU), SOR/2016-194 (CA) standards.

- Do not leave any heavy objects on the fabric as it will likely result in a drop in light absorption performance.
- As a drawback of the flocking process, little bits of particulates may be generated due to pile-loss, so it may not be suitable in environments where cleanliness is a top priority such as internal parts of precision equipment.
- In the case of wrinkles or creases, indirectly applying steam and brushing with a soft brush may restore its performance.

A near-flat 0.15–0.2% reflectance across the visible spectrum
Musou Black Fabric FR holds a total reflectance of roughly 0.15–0.2% across the visible range (400–750nm), just behind Musou Black Fabric KIWAMI, the darkest fabric in our lineup. The fire-retardant treatment does not measurably compromise the optical performance that both fabrics were designed around.
Past roughly 750nm, reflectance rises sharply, peaking near 50.8% around 1120nm before gradually easing through the rest of the near-infrared band. Fabric FR is a visible-light material only; it was never engineered or tested for infrared suppression. If your application involves LiDAR, IR sensors, or NIR cameras, our IR Flock Sheet is built for that range instead.
All reflectance values are total hemispherical reflectance measured at 8° angle of incidence (AOI) using an integrating-sphere spectrophotometer (Shimadzu SolidSpec-3700DUV) per JIS Z 8722, source: Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Technology Research Institute, test date 2021-11-29.

18–21V triboelectric voltage under JIS L1094, among the best of any fabric in our range, useful anywhere the material sits near sensitive electronics or is handled frequently.
A4 evaluation cuts, meter cuts at 1090mm width, full rolls, or custom shapes by hand-cutting or die-cutting. Laser-cutting isn't available for Fabric FR.
A woven velvet, not a flocked sheet, engineered for code-restricted spaces
Fabric FR is a warp-pile velvet woven from a rayon and cupro blend, then finished with a fire-retardant treatment, a different construction from our electrostatically flocked VL Flock Sheet and IR Flock Sheet. It shares its base weave and optical design lineage with Musou Black Fabric KIWAMI, but it is not KIWAMI with a coating simply added afterward; the two are separately sourced, woven fabrics with their own specifications.
We built Fabric FR because customers kept asking for an ultra-black material they could actually use in spaces where fire code applies, theaters, museums, public venues, architectural interiors, where a standard black fabric (including our own non-FR lineup) cannot legally be installed. Getting there took formal certification to four separate international standards, work most ultra-black materials on the market have not done.
The result is a fabric dark enough to disappear on camera and under stage lighting, backed by paperwork that satisfies a fire marshal, not just a reflectance chart.

- Washing: not washable; moisture and pressure flatten the pile permanently, raising reflectance. Steam applied indirectly, followed by brushing with a soft brush in one direction, can restore flattened pile.
- Mounting: strong double-sided tape is preferred over paste adhesives; if nails or fasteners are unavoidable, nails cause less pile fraying than screws.
- Weight & foot traffic: avoid placing heavy objects on the fabric or walking on it; sustained pressure crushes the pile and reduces absorption performance.
- Pile direction: like Fabric KIWAMI, the weaving process gives the pile a fixed nap direction. For multi-panel installations, keep every panel's nap oriented the same way, mismatched panels will show visibly uneven reflectance.
- Color consistency: dye-lot variation is possible across large orders exceeding roughly 264 linear meters; for large installations spanning multiple dye lots, request lot-matched material in advance.

Stage and theatrical work is where Fabric FR gets used most, but any project that needs both ultra-low reflectance and a fire-retardant paper trail is a fit.

FAQ
Is Fabric FR the same as Musou Black Fabric KIWAMI with a flame-retardant coating added?+
No. Fabric FR shares KIWAMI's general weaving approach and optical design lineage, but it is a separately sourced, separately woven fabric with its own specification, not KIWAMI with a coating applied afterward. Treat the two as related but distinct products.
Does it absorb near-infrared light as well as visible light?+
No. Fabric FR was engineered and tested for the visible spectrum only. Reflectance rises sharply past roughly 750nm and peaks near 50.8% around 1120nm. For LiDAR, IR sensors, or NIR camera applications, our IR Flock Sheet is the right choice instead.
Is it opaque enough to fully block light on its own, as a stage curtain?+
Its light-absorption performance is excellent, but an independent evaluation by a theatrical-curtain fabricator found the fabric itself too light/thin to guarantee full light-blocking (opacity) on its own for stage-curtain use; a backing or lining layer is recommended where total blackout, not just low reflectance, is required.
Which fire codes does it satisfy, and will that cover my project?+
Fabric FR is certified under ASTM E84 (Class A, obtained 2026), NFPA 701 (US), EN 13773 (EU), and SOR/2016-194 (Canada), the latter three obtained in 2022. Fire-code requirements vary significantly by jurisdiction, venue type, and application; please confirm your local requirements before purchasing, and contact us if you need supporting certification documents.
Is ASTM E84 Class A alone enough to install Fabric FR as a wall covering in the US?+
Not entirely on its own. ASTM E84 Class A (FSI 20 / SDI 70, SGS-CSTC Shunde, 2026) covers surface burning characteristics, but U.S. building codes such as IBC 803.5.2 typically also require textile wall coverings to be installed in a sprinklered building, or separately tested to NFPA 265 for use in non-sprinklered spaces; Fabric FR has not been tested to NFPA 265. Please check with your local building department or fire marshal on which additional requirements apply to your specific installation.
Is Fabric FR REACH compliant?+
Not fully. Third-party testing (SGS, 2024-12-04) found that boron-based compounds in the flame-retardant treatment exceed the 0.1% w/w SVHC threshold under REACH, which triggers Article 33 disclosure obligations for shipments into the EU. Check the lab report for details, and please factor this into your compliance planning.
Can Fabric FR be washed?+
No. Moisture and pressure permanently flatten the pile and raise reflectance. If wrinkles or creases appear, indirectly applied steam followed by brushing with a soft brush in one direction can restore performance.
What width does it come in, and can I get it wider?+
The effective black width is fixed at 1,090mm (1,120mm including edge/backing), a limit set by the loom used to weave it; we cannot produce it wider. For larger coverage, plan a multi-panel layout, and keep every panel's pile-nap direction consistent, mismatched orientation shows up as visibly uneven reflectance under light.
What sizes and cutting options are available?+
An A4 evaluation cut, meter cuts from 1–10m at 1,090mm width, and full rolls at approximately 22m or 44m. Custom shapes can be produced by hand-cutting or die-cutting; laser-cutting isn't available for Fabric FR. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
What are your lead times for bulk orders?+
Cut lengths and A4 samples typically ship within 1–2 weeks. Bulk roll orders run longer: roughly 1–2 months for 500m, 2–3 months for 1,500m, and 4–5 months for 4,000m, though actual availability depends on current stock; please contact us for a current estimate on larger volumes.
Do you provide product samples, and what about bulk pricing?+
We don't provide free samples, but you can purchase an A4 evaluation cut from our online store with no minimum order, an easy way to assess the material firsthand. For roll-quantity or bulk orders, please contact us with your project details for pricing and lead time.
Are there export restrictions on Fabric FR?+
We're unable to ship to PO boxes or military addresses. Import duties and VAT are collected by the carrier on delivery, not included at checkout. Please reach out with your shipping destination and project details so we can confirm feasibility.
Do you provide a certificate of conformance or test report with each shipment?+
Fire-retardant certification documents are available on request. We don't issue a per-shipment lot report as standard; if you need supporting documentation for a specific order, please contact us so we can confirm what can actually be measured, along with timeline and cost, on a case-by-case basis.
